Having recently returned from a volatile conflict zone in the Balkans, the peace and tranquility of Cambodia was a welcome relief, but its history is a salutary reminder that if an evil seed is allowed to thrive then unimaginable horrors can easily befall an otherwise peaceful place. Thankfully the days of Pol Pot are long gone, but the scars remain on the landscape with millions of anti-personnel mines liberally scattered and a daily threat to children and farmers. The clean up is underway, but the size of the task immense, especially as annual floods and landslides move these deadly devices, sometimes overlaying areas that have already been cleared and deemed safe; the same type of clean up has started in Kosovo. It's a sign of the moral dimension being skewed through human imperfection, whereby these devices are built and sold by humans for profit, they're utilised by the military and paramilitaries indiscriminately to maim or kill, but who is really to blame, the politicians, the industrialists, the military, the mercenary or is it the human fallibilities of greed and a persisting theme of sadism towards their own species? Unfortunately, there are many other examples of the latter trait.
